1080p HD meets YouTube

Starting this week, YouTube significantly increased its maximum video resolution from 720p to 1080p. This is to accommodate higher-quality videos taken with high-definition cameras. There’s no doubt that many YouTubers are jumping with joy with ideas to test this out.
“As resolution of consumer cameras increases, we want to make sure YouTube is the best home on the Web to showcase your content,” YouTube software engineer Billy Biggs said Thursday on the company’s blog.
The change will be noticeable when viewers with faster computers and big monitors switch to full screen mode. This will result in a clearer picture than with 720p. However, if you don’t meet the requirements, don’t worry. The lower resolution will still be available.
“I already uploaded a 1080p quality video before this. Does that mean I need to re-upload it?” The simple answers is no, you don’t. YouTube plans to re-encode 1080p videos already sent to the site to make it available in higher resolution. The process of doing this, however, may take a while.
This is another big step for YouTube, taking them from a video site of crappy mobile phone quality to more professional and cleaner videos. Thus, bigger advertisers will start to consider YouTube as a good investment. This in turn makes YouTube one step closer to being profitable.

I won’t be using it. 720p is choppy enough for me, 1080 is unwatchable for me.
