ForFun808 live interview
PauseStopRewind: Before you started uploading videos onto YouTube, how often did you watch videos on there?
ForFun808: I watched videos almost everyday. I started out watching random people crashing and people getting hurt. Then I started watching people like Ask A Ninja and The Angry Video Game Nerd. Then I found a user named Zushen who did cartoon rants. Those guys really inspired me to make my own videos, because I love expressing myself and keeping people entertained.
When you uploaded your first video, was it a spur of the moment thing or did you spend some time thinking about it?
Well before I started vlogs, rants, and sketches, I started out by doing Magic Tricks. At the time I was really into magic, and I noticed a lot of people also posted magic videos. So I wanted to do both, do magic and vlogs. So my first videos were me showing off my magic tricks to people. It was something I really had to think long and hard about though, because I bought a $350 camera as my first camera to do these videos.
How did you progressed from magic tricks to vlogs, rants, and sketches?
Well magic USED TO BE HUGE on YouTube. It eventually died out and the magic community fazed out. Plus so many people were hecklers and revealing magic tricks in the comments and on YouTube videos, so I decided to quit doing magic trick videos and just start vlogging.
I understand your first “12 Fuck you”s came from a MySpace bulletin post. Why did you decide to do a video on that?
I thought it would be funny. I laughed my ass off the first time reading The 12 Fuck You’s Of MySpace. Plus I agreed with everything that was said in that MySpace bulletin.
Did you expect that video the start a series of “12 Fuck You’s”?
I never expected to do a series on it, but then a few fans requested that I do more 12 Fuck You Videos. I immediately thought of YouTube and all of the bullshit YouTubers had to deal with everyday. So one day I wrote down 12 things that pissed us off about YouTube on a daily basis. I made the video, I uploaded it, and it was immediately a huge hit, probably my breakthrough video.
When you think of the 12 Fuck You’s, do they come to you naturally or do you ever find yourself having to really think about them?
Hmm I’d say about half of The 12 Fuck You’s come naturally, and the other half I have to dig deep and think about it. Either way I find it difficult to make The 12 Fuck You’s structured and funny. This is why it takes me so long to do a 12 Fuck You Video.
Where do your other ideas for videos typically come from?
Other video ideas are more spur of the moment. Like if I feel like vlogging about a subject, feel like parodying something, or feel like trying something new. I usually do other video ideas based off things I see, because it gives me ideas. Like Powerthirst gave me the idea to do a Haterade parody video.
Speaking of Haterade, your 12 Fuck You’s, and rant series you seem like you have a lot of hate haha. Are you like this in ever day life?
Haha I’m actually quite the opposite in person. In real life I’m usually pretty positive and happy. Because of this, my friends in real life are shocked when they see how angry I am in my videos. And in reverse, my internet friends who’ve seen my videos first are pleased to see how cool and positive I am in real life.
So how much of your personality carries over onto your videos?
Hmm I’d say mostly the angry and expressive side of me is shown in my videos. If I get really pissed off, that is how I can be haha
How has YouTube affected your life, and where do you see yourself in the future?
It has provided me with a fun hobby I can do. I enjoy making videos and making money through it too. I never thought I’d ever be Partner and making money off of my videos. I see myself making videos for a long time because its fun
How did you come up with the idea of “The Twitter Rap Song”, and what was that like making it?
Everyone was doing Twitter Rap songs, so I thought I’d hop on the band wagon. It was also a part of the “You know you’re ADDICTED when” series. It was fun, but I doubt I’ll do more songs. People like my vlogging and sketches better, and I’m just not a singer or rapper lol
haha, I don’t know, I can see a ForFun808 rap album.
Nah, don’t ever expect that to happen haha. I’ll stick to what I’m good at.
Has anyone ever come up to you in public because they saw your videos?
The internet is so big, and so is the real world. Because of this, maybe two or three people have recognized me. The ones who recognized me were all female lol. However, at the 7-8-9 gathering in NYC, A LOT of people recognized me and knew who I was ^_^
Do you have any funny stories from 7-8-9?
Not too much funny stories. It was all good times, we all met up, partied, got drunk, and sang karaoke. It was awesome and I met hundreds of great people/friends.
What would be the one peice of advice you would give to a new YouTuber?
1. A YouTuber must enjoy making videos.
2. If someone wants to be Partner or get a lot of viewers, they have to be serious about their videos. Which means they gave to write, film, and edit their videos better.
3. Don’t start drama on YouTube, in the end, it is pointless.
And finally, a lot of people on twitter are wondering are you Asian, Hawaiian, or both?
I’m Chinese, Hawaiian, Irish
